Cyprine

Cyprine is a gemstone that represents the rarest color expression of the Vesuvianite group. While Vesuvianite is typically associated with deep “forest” greens or earthy browns, Cyprine is distinguished by its vivid, sky-blue to teal-blue hue. I have always been captivated by this “electric” personality; it is a mineral born from the presence of trace copper in high-temperature metamorphic environments. It possesses a vitreous to resinous luster and a crystalline depth that can rival fine blue Zircon or even Aquamarine. For the collector, Cyprine is a prize of chemical rarity—it is a stone of the “blue fire,” representing a perfect geological moment where copper was introduced into the complex silicate lattice of a skarn deposit.

The Heritage & Discovery

Historical Significance: Cyprine holds a unique place in the study of mineral chemistry. Historically, it was identified as a copper-rich variety of Vesuvianite (Idocrase). Its name is derived from the Latin cyprinus, meaning “copper,” a direct reference to the element that gives it its legendary blue. In the world of fine minerals, it is celebrated as the most sought-after variety of its species, standing as a favorite for those who value rare color variants of common mineral groups. It serves as a brilliant reminder of how a single trace element can transform a standard rock-forming mineral into an elite, “neon” gemstone.

Discovery: The mineral was first described in the early 19th century based on specimens from Telemark, Norway. Scientifically, it is a complex calcium aluminum silicate. Its discovery in the ancient, metamorphosed limestones of Norway provided mineralogists with the first clear look at how copper integrates into the Vesuvianite structure. Since its identification, it has remained a staple of the “connoisseur” market, with the finest pieces traditionally coming from historic European and modern South African finds.

Important Mines: The legendary and type-locality for world-class Cyprine is Sauland, Telemark, Norway. However, some of the most spectacular, gem-quality crystals have come from the Wessels Mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field, South Africa. I also have a high regard for the rare finds in Franklin, New Jersey. For the vault, I prioritize the Wessels Mine material for its exceptional transparency and the Norwegian specimens for their historic pedigree and unique “teal” saturation.

Mineralogical Profile

Description: Cyprine is a copper-bearing variety of Vesuvianite that crystallizes in the tetragonal system. It sits at a 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable stone that takes a magnificent, high-gloss polish. It is characterized by its vitreous luster and its range of sky-blue, teal, and occasionally violet-blue colors.

One of its most identifying traits is its copper-induced pleochroism—it can show different shades of blue or green depending on the viewing angle. It has a high refractive index ($n \approx 1.70$ to $1.72$), which provides a crisp, “glassy” brilliance when faceted. Because it is a complex silicate, it often forms in skarns alongside garnets and wollastonite. When I select a piece for the collection, I look for “clean” crystals with sharp, tetragonal terminations and a high-reflectivity luster, as these highlight the sophisticated, three-dimensional geometry that makes Cyprine a standout for the systematic collector. It is a dense, high-vibration mineral that offers a unique, “electric” beauty unlike any other silicate species.
