A lifetime of searching for the rare, the unusual, and the almost impossible to facet.
Dear Collectors,
I am Freakingcat. Some of you have known me for many years, and some I had the pleasure of meeting personally at gemstone and mineral fairs around the world — from Tucson to Japan and many places in between. I always loved travelling, meeting miners, cutters, dealers and collectors, looking through parcels, asking questions, learning, and hunting for things that were difficult to find.
When someone told me something was “impossible” to find or facet, that usually fascinated me most and immediately sent me on a hunt.
Rare mineral species. Strange inclusions. Meteorite material and tektites. UV-reactive stones. Materials that were too soft, too brittle, too unusual, or simply considered too difficult to facet. Together with my master cutter, through countless trials and errors, we found ways to create faceted stones from materials that were rarely, if ever, seen this way. For me, faceting was never only about clarity or weight. I wanted to bring out the character of a stone — its colour, structure, inclusions, optical effects, and sometimes simply its strangeness. With a small workshop and a remarkable master cutter with more than forty years of experience, we experimented with materials that most cutters would never put on a faceting machine. She is retired today, but still helps me occasionally with new pieces for the collection.
The Collection
After many years of running my gemstone company, I decided that I wanted to do other things with my life and I did not like the business aspect taking most of my time. The commercial stock was sold as a whole to a large gemstone television company, while my personal collection stayed safely stored in a vault.
I then spent many years living in different parts of the world, doing very different things, travelling, learning, living with animals in nature and gathering new experiences. Today I no longer run a gemstone business and I am happy to have started a life with less travelling, setting up for the first time ever a small home. I spend much of my time researching history and writing books, while slowly going through my personal gem collection again.
