Fluorite (China)
Fluorite from the hydrothermal vein networks and skarn deposits of China represents an international benchmark for crystal scale, structural diversity, and color saturation in isometric halide mineralogy. Primarily occurring as calcium fluoride, it is a mineral I have always respected for its vivid emerald-green to neon-cyan daylight fire, glassy surface perfection, and disciplined cubic geometry. For the collector, a top-tier Chinese fluorite—whether a mirror-faced cubic cluster from Hunan or a stepped magenta octahedron from Inner Mongolia—is a prized trophy of fluorine-rich metasomatism; it offers bright vitreous luster, remarkable internal phantom zoning, and an authoritative presence that makes it an indispensable cornerstone for the systematic vault. As an artist, I find the stark geometric phantom layers and rich spectrum of saturated tones to be one of nature’s most harmonious crystalline achievements.
The Heritage & Discovery
Historical Significance Chinese fluorite is an essential index species for decoding multi-stage hydrothermal mineralization and fluid cooling across eastern Asia. Historically the world leader in industrial fluorspar, China transformed the global collector landscape in the late 20th century as deep mining in Hunan, Fujian, and Inner Mongolia unearthed specimens of unprecedented size, transparency, and complex phantom zoning for museum cabinets.
Discovery Large crystals were uncovered during extensive base-metal and tungsten mining through ancient tectonic fold belts. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through fractured carbonates deposited calcium fluoride in multi-generational pulses, creating distinct internal phantom cubes. The broad color palette—emerald-green, royal purple, and rare sky-blue—is governed by localized rare-earth element substitutions and radiation-induced color centers (F-centers). Many specimens show vivid violet-blue fluorescence under long-wave ultraviolet light.
Important Mines The undisputed capitals for fine Chinese fluorite include the Xianghualing and Yaogangxian mines in Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, globally revered for lustrous green, teal, and purple phantom cubes associated with quartz and wolframite. Inner Mongolia’s Huanggangliang Mine produces iconic magenta and pink octahedrons, while epithermal veins in Fujian and Jiangxi yield exceptional blue and botryoidal habits.
Mineralogical Profile
Description Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral crystallizing in the isometric system (hexoctahedral class). Sitting at baseline 4 on the Mohs scale, its lustrous faces possess four directions of perfect octahedral cleavage parallel to {111}, requiring careful archival handling to protect delicate edges and corners from mechanical shock. It displays a bright vitreous luster, an index of refraction of 1.434, and a specific gravity of 3.17 to 3.20. It routinely forms sharp cubes, modified octahedrons, and penetration twins, commonly occurring in association with Quartz, Calcite, Wolframite, Pyrite, and Scheelite.
Chemical Formula CaF2
