Aragonite (Morocco)
Aragonite represents the “cyclic-twin” marvel of the carbonate world. While it shares the same chemical formula as Calcite, it crystallizes in a different system, making it a “polymorph” of geological instability. Over millions of years, Aragonite often seeks to transform into Calcite, but the spectacular specimens from Morocco have remained “frozen” in their original, high-vibration state. For the specialist, a top-tier Moroccan Aragonite is a prize of structural complexity; it offers a vitreous luster and a “solid” presence that makes it a true “high-frequency” asset for the systematic vault.
The Heritage & Discovery
Historical Significance: Aragonite is a vital species for understanding the role of magnesium and temperature in carbonate precipitation. Historically, it was named after the Aragon region in Spain, but the discoveries in North Africa have redefined the aesthetic standard for the species. In the world of fine minerals, it is celebrated for its natural, “geometric” architecture, often forming “starburst” or “iron-flower” patterns. It stands as a symbol of organization and truth, bridging the gap between common sedimentary minerals and the elite world of “sharp-edged” collector crystals. It serves as a reminder that even the most “common” elements can reach a state of crystalline perfection when allowed to grow in the unique hydrothermal environments of the Atlas Mountains.
Discovery: The Moroccan deposits became world-famous in the mid-20th century. Scientifically, these are often “cyclic twins,” where three or more crystals grow together to form a hexagonal-looking prism that is actually a complex orthorhombic assembly. Its discovery in the Tazouta and Sefrou regions provided mineralogists with the first clear look at the species’ potential for “neon-amber” and “honey-brown” perfection. My own respect for this material grew from observing its “pseudo-hexagonal” symmetry; when you look at the top of a Moroccan “star” crystal, you are seeing a masterclass in twinning that is unmistakable to the trained eye.
Important Mines: The undisputed world capital for the finest, “amber-colored” cyclic twins is the Tazouta Mine in the Sefrou Province, Morocco. These Moroccan specimens set the global benchmark for crystal size and “star-burst” architecture. I also have a high regard for the “flos-ferri” (flower of iron) varieties from Oujda and the classic “pseudo-hexagonal” prisms from Molina de Aragón, Spain. For the vault, I prioritize the Tazouta material for its unmatched “honey-glow” saturation and its iconic “twinned” geometry.
Mineralogical Profile
Description: Aragonite is a calcium carbonate that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It sits at a 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, making it a relatively soft mineral that must be handled with care to avoid bruising its “delicate” crystal faces. It is characterized by its vitreous luster and its unmistakable, “earth-tone” to “amber-red” color palette.
One of its most identifying traits is its lack of rhombohedral cleavage (unlike Calcite) and its tendency to form “pseudo-hexagonal” twins. It has a moderate refractive index (approx 1.53 to 1.68) and a specific gravity (SG approx 2.9). Because it is a product of low-temperature hydrothermal activity, it is often found in association with Gypsum, Calcite, and Dolomite. When I select a piece for the collection, I look for “razor-sharp” terminations and a “glowing” interior when backlit, as these highlight the sophisticated, three-dimensional geometry of the mineral’s growth. It is a light, high-vibration mineral that offers a unique, “architectural” beauty unlike any other carbonate species.
