Seraphinite

Seraphinite is a gemstone that represents the "ethereal" beauty of the metamorphic world. A gem-grade variety of Clinochlore, it is a mineral I have always admired for its deep, forest-green body and its shimmering, silver inclusions that look remarkably like the feathered wings of an angel. The name itself is derived from the "Seraphim," the highest order of angels in celestial hierarchy. For the specialist, Seraphinite is a prize of chatoyancy and light; it is a stone that "moves" as you turn it, with the silvery fibers reflecting light in a way that suggests celestial motion. It is a mineral of the rugged Siberian wilderness, offering a soft, high-vibration aesthetic that feels both grounding and spiritually uplifted.

The Heritage & Discovery

Historical Significance: Seraphinite is a relatively modern discovery in the world of fine gems, but it quickly achieved legendary status among collectors. Historically, it was recognized as a particularly beautiful form of Chlorite, a group of minerals often relegated to "common" status. In the world of fine minerals, it stands as the absolute peak of micaceous aesthetics. It stands as a symbol of healing and connection, bridging the gap between common green silicates and the elite world of "phenomenal" ornamental stones. It serves as a reminder that even within a group of minerals typically found as tiny flakes in rock, nature can occasionally produce a massive, "winged" masterpiece.

Discovery: The mineral was famously championed by the Russian mineralogist Nikolay Koksharov in the 19th century, though it wasn't until the late 20th century that it gained global recognition as a gemstone. Scientifically, it is a complex magnesium iron aluminum silicate. Its discovery in the iron mines of the Lake Baikal region provided mineralogists with the first clear look at a "massive" and translucent variety of Clinochlore that was tough enough to be cut and polished. Since its identification, it has become the definitive representative of the Chlorite group for the connoisseur's vault.

Important Mines: The undisputed and only major world source for genuine, high-quality Seraphinite is the Korshunovskoye Iron Deposit in Eastern Siberia, Russia. This remote location produces the intense, "winged" material that has become world-famous. I also have a high regard for the rare, darker green specimens found in the Ural Mountains. For the vault, I prioritize the "classic" Korshunovskoye material for its unmatched silver chatoyancy and its deep, "mossy" green saturation.

Mineralogical Profile

Description: Seraphinite is a variety of Clinochlore, a magnesium iron aluminum silicate hydroxide that crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It sits at a 2 to 4 on the Mohs scale, making it a relatively soft gemstone that is best suited for pendants, earrings, or protected settings. It is characterized by its pearly to vitreous luster and its unmistakable pattern of radiating, silvery-white fibers.

One of its most identifying traits is its chatoyancy—the way the light plays across the fibrous, feathery inclusions of mica. These fibers are actually tiny crystals that have grown in radiating patterns, creating the "angel wing" effect. It has a moderate refractive index ($n \approx 1.57$ to 1.59$) and a characteristic "silky" feel when polished. Because it is a chlorite mineral, it is often found in association with Magnetite and Calcite. When I select a piece for the collection, I look for "sharp" silver wings and a deep, even green background, as these represent the species in its most perfect and evocative form.
