Roman Glass

Roman Glass is a piece of history you can hold in your hand—a material created thousands of years ago by the Roman Empire, lost to the earth, and recently excavated. Of course, it is not a mineral! It is ancient glass that has spent nearly two millennia buried, undergoing a slow, natural transformation. I just love this material; we gave it a little bit of a cut on the edges to reveal its inner clarity while preserving its ancient "skin." It isn't a gemstone in the traditional sense, but for a true collector, it is a magnificent piece for the home—a bridge across time that carries the craftsmanship of the ancient world into the present.

The Heritage & Discovery

Historical Significance: Roman glassmaking was a pinnacle of ancient industry, reaching its peak between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Historically, the Romans were the first to master glassblowing, moving away from luxury cast vessels to everyday items that could be used by the masses. When these pieces were discarded or buried in tombs and shipwrecks, the unique minerals and moisture in the soil began a centuries-long process of "iridization." This creates a thin, multi-layered patina that reflects light in spectacular rainbows. In the world of collectibles, it represents the intersection of human ingenuity and the slow, patient artistry of the Earth itself.

Discovery: Most of the material we see today is discovered during archaeological excavations or construction projects in former Roman territories, particularly across the Mediterranean and the Levant. Unlike minerals that are "discovered" by geologists, Roman Glass is "recovered" by those uncovering the remnants of the Roman Empire. Its scientific identity is that of a soda-lime-silica glass, but its value lies in its age and the unique "weathering crust" that no modern factory can replicate.

Important Sources: The most vibrant and well-preserved specimens typically come from the dry soils of Israel and Jordan, where the chemical composition of the earth perfectly facilitates the growth of the iridescent patina. I also have a high regard for pieces recovered from Afghanistan (along the ancient Silk Road) and Italy. I prioritize the material with the most intense "rainbow" flash for the vault, as it shows the most dramatic evidence of its two-thousand-year journey through the earth.

Mineralogical Profile

Description: Roman Glass is a man-made silicate (soda-lime-silica glass) that has been naturally weathered. It sits at approximately 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, making it similar in hardness to Opal or Lapis Lazuli. It is characterized by its vitreous luster and the spectacular "iridescence" found on its surface.

One of its most identifying traits is the patina—a thin, flakey crust formed by the chemical breakdown of the glass surface over 2,000 years. This layer acts as a natural prism, scattering light into brilliant blues, greens, and pinks. Underneath this "skin," the glass itself is often a soft aqua, olive green, or honey-yellow. Because it is an amorphous solid (not a crystal), it has no internal cleavage, but it does feature a "conchoidal" fracture, which we use when shaping the edges to ensure a smooth, professional finish. It is a delicate, historical artifact that requires a respectful touch, offering a unique "inner light" that was literally sparked by Roman fire and finished by the passage of time.

Chemical Composition: Primarily SiO2 (Silica) with varying amounts of Na2O (Soda), CaO (Lime), and trace metal oxides used as colorants.
