Pezzottaite
Pezzottaite is a mineral that truly shook the gemological world when it was first discovered in the early 2000s. For a long time, it was mistakenly identified as a cesium-rich variety of Beryl (Raspberry Beryl), but closer inspection revealed it was a distinct species entirely. I remember the excitement in the community when this was announced; it’s not every day a new gemstone with such intense, saturated pink-to-raspberry color is discovered. It is a rare “cesium analogue” of beryl, and while it shares some visual similarities with Morganite, Pezzottaite has a much higher refractive index and a unique crystal symmetry. Faceting this stone is a rare privilege, as the material is often heavily included; finding a clean, transparent piece is like finding a needle in a haystack of raspberry silk.
The Heritage & Discovery
Historical Significance: Pezzottaite represents one of the most significant gemological discoveries of the 21st century. It challenged our understanding of the beryl group and forced a re-evaluation of how cesium and lithium interact in pegmatitic environments. Historically, it is famous for its “one-hit wonder” status—the original find in Madagascar was spectacular but extremely limited, making specimens from the type locality some of the most sought-after rarities in modern mineralogy. It stands as a symbol of the “new frontier” of gemstone discovery.
Discovery: The mineral was officially recognized by the IMA in 2003. it was named in honor of Dr. Federico Pezzotta, a renowned Italian mineralogist who was instrumental in the initial study and characterization of the material. The original discovery occurred at the Sakavalana mine in Madagascar in late 2002. Since then, it has remained a hallmark of “exotic” gem collections worldwide.
Important Mines: The type locality and only major source for high-quality gem material is the Sakavalana mine in the Fianarantsoa Province of Madagascar. While some small occurrences have been reported in Afghanistan (Kunar Province) and Myanmar, the Madagascar material remains the gold standard for color and crystal size. We focus on securing pieces with that signature “raspberry” saturation, as the pinks from other localities tend to be much paler and lack the vibrant “glow” of the original Sakavalana find.
Mineralogical Profile
Description: Pezzottaite is a cesium lithium beryllium aluminum silicate that crystallizes in the trigonal system (unlike Beryl, which is hexagonal). It sits at a 8 on the Mohs scale, making it exceptionally durable and suitable for all types of high-end jewelry. It is characterized by its vitreous luster and intense reddish-pink to raspberry-red color.
Because of its higher cesium content, it is significantly denser than common beryl. One of its most interesting features is its strong pleochroism—showing shades of pinkish-orange and purplish-pink when viewed from different angles. When faceted, it exhibits a brilliance and fire that surpasses most pink beryls, making it a true centerpiece for any collection of rare gemstones.
