Triplite

Triplite is a gemstone that pulses with a deep, “burnt-orange” to cinnamon-red energy. A rare manganese iron phosphate, it is a stone that I have always admired for its incredible saturation; when you find a gem-quality piece, the color is so intense it almost looks like a piece of glowing coal. Historically, Triplite was known mostly as a dull, opaque mineral found in pegmatites, but the discovery of transparent, facetable material changed everything for collectors like us. It is a dense, “heavy” feeling stone that takes a magnificent polish. I find it to be one of the most sophisticated rare gems in the vault—it doesn’t scream for attention like a sapphire, but once you catch that deep, sunset-red flash, you can’t look away.

The Heritage & Discovery

Historical Significance: Triplite is a key mineral for understanding the late-stage crystallization of phosphate-rich granitic pegmatites. Historically, it was often mistaken for other manganese minerals like Rhodochrosite or even Garnet, but its unique phosphate chemistry sets it apart. It represents a specific environmental “sweet spot” where manganese and iron are concentrated alongside fluorine. In the world of fine gems, it is celebrated for its rarity in a transparent state, standing as a “connoisseur’s gem” that represents the rugged, complex chemistry of the Earth’s continental crust.

Discovery: The mineral was first described in 1813 from specimens found in France. It was named by François Sulpice Beudant from the Greek word triplos, meaning “triple,” in reference to its three directions of cleavage that were thought to be at right angles (though they are actually slightly oblique). This name has stuck for over two centuries, marking it as a classic species in the world of systematic mineralogy.

Important Mines: While the type-locality is in Chanteloube, France, the most spectacular, gem-quality Triplite ever discovered came from the Shigar Valley in Pakistan and the Aris quarries in Namibia. I also have a high regard for the deep red material from China. For the vault, I prioritize the Pakistani stones, as they offer the world-class transparency and “neon-cinnamon” color that allow for the most brilliant faceted gems.

Mineralogical Profile

Description: Triplite is a manganese iron phosphate fluoride that crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It sits at a 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a relatively durable stone for specialized jewelry, though it should be protected from hard knocks due to its cleavage. It is characterized by its vitreous to resinous luster and its typically brownish-red to bright orange-red appearance.

One of its most identifying traits is its density—it feels surprisingly heavy for its size ($3.5$ to $3.9$ g/cm³). It features two directions of good cleavage, which can make faceting a challenge but results in a beautiful, “stepped” reflection of light within the stone. It has a high refractive index ($n \approx 1.66$ to $1.71$), giving it a rich, “oily” brilliance that is very distinct from the “glassy” look of quartz or beryl. Because it is a manganese-rich mineral, it can tarnish to a darker brown over long periods if exposed to the elements, but in its faceted, protected form, it holds its fiery sunset color forever. It is a bold, intellectual mineral that captures the intense heat of its pegmatitic origin.
