Zoisite
Zoisite is a mineral that has spent much of its history hiding in the shadow of its world-famous blue variety, Tanzanite. However, for those of us who look closer, the broader Zoisite family is one of the most versatile and vibrant groups in the gemstone world. I have always been particularly fond of the rare, transparent green varieties; they possess a crisp, “electric” lime hue that feels incredibly fresh compared to the deeper greens of Emerald or Tourmaline. Whether it is the classic pink “Thulite” or the spectacular “Anyolite” (ruby in zoisite), this mineral offers a diversity of color and texture that is a constant inspiration. Faceting a clean piece of green Zoisite is a masterclass in light; its high refractive index gives it a brilliance that truly makes it stand out in the vault.
The Heritage & Discovery
Historical Significance: Zoisite is a calcium aluminum silicate that represents a significant chapter in Alpine mineralogy. Historically, it was known for its massive, ornamental forms before the 1967 discovery of Tanzanite catapulted the species into global stardom. It represents a specific type of regional metamorphism where calcium-rich rocks are transformed under intense pressure. For the collector, “standard” Zoisite remains a sophisticated choice, offering the same physical durability as its more famous blue relative but with a color palette that feels more connected to the raw, untamed earth.
Discovery: The mineral was first identified in the Saualpe mountains of Austria in 1805. It was named in honor of Sigmund Zois (Baron von Edelstein), a Slovenian scientist and mineralogist who provided the first specimens for study. Zois was a central figure in the Enlightenment era of Central Europe, and his dedication to documenting the minerals of his homeland ensured that this complex silicate took its proper place in the scientific record.
Important Mines: While Tanzania is the undisputed king of gem-quality Zoisite (specifically the Merelani Hills), world-class green and yellow specimens have also emerged from Kenya and Pakistan. The historic Austrian localities still produce fine mineralogical specimens of the pink variety, Thulite. I source our transparent green and yellow material primarily from the Merelani region, as the geological conditions there produce the highest clarity and the most “neon” color saturation available on the market today.
Mineralogical Profile
Description: Zoisite is a calcium aluminum hydroxy-silicate and a member of the epidote group, crystallizing in the orthorhombic system. It sits at a 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it a very durable gemstone for all types of jewelry. It is characterized by its vitreous luster and strong pleochroism, which is the ability to show different colors when viewed from different angles.
In its transparent gem forms, it exhibits a brilliance that rivals many higher-priced stones. The green color is typically caused by traces of chromium or vanadium. Because of its perfect cleavage in one direction, the faceting process must be handled with extreme care to avoid internal “splitting” during the final polish. It is a stone that rewards the patient lapidary with a mirror-like finish and incredible internal fire.
Chemical Formula: Ca2Al3(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH)
