Thulite is a gemstone that brings a vibrant, "strawberry-cream" palette to the mineral world. A pink, manganese-bearing variety of Zoisite, it is the more opaque and rugged sibling of the famous Tanzanite. I have always been charmed by its specific shade of pink—a dense, saturated "rose" that often features swirls of white calcite or greyish-green epidote, giving it a beautifully marbled, organic appearance. Unlike the transparent, "glassy" gems of the high-end trade, Thulite possesses a waxy to vitreous luster that feels incredibly substantial in the hand. It is a stone of the North, forged in the ancient, cold metamorphic rocks of Scandinavia, and it carries a warmth and character that makes it a favorite for ornamental carvings and bold cabochons.
The Heritage & DiscoveryHistorical Significance: Thulite is deeply rooted in the history of Northern Europe. Historically, it was named after the mythical island of "Thule"—the ancient Greek and Roman name for the northernmost part of the world. It was traditionally used in Scandinavia as a decorative stone, and its discovery was a point of pride for Norwegian mineralogy. In the world of fine minerals, it represents the transformative power of manganese in the Zoisite group. While Tanzanite captured the world's attention for its transparency, Thulite remains the "soul" of the family, representing the rugged, unyielding beauty of the mountain schist. It stands as a symbol of northern resilience and the vibrant life that can be found even in the harshest landscapes.
Discovery: The mineral was first identified in 1820 in Sauland, Telemark, Norway. It was named by the chemist Anders Ekeberg (the discoverer of Tantalum), who was struck by its intense pink color. Scientifically, it is a calcium aluminum hydroxy-silicate. Its discovery allowed mineralogists to understand how manganese can replace aluminum in the Zoisite structure to create a spectrum of pinks and reds, long before the blue variety was even a dream.
Important Mines: The legendary and type-locality for the world's finest Thulite is Lom and Sauland in Norway. These sites produce the most iconic, deep pink material that is prized by collectors. I also have a high regard for the newer finds in Namibia, which show a very bright, almost "neon" pink, and the material from the Riverside County area in California, USA. For the vault, I prioritize the "classic" Norwegian material, as its historical provenance and unique "marbled" texture represent the global benchmark for the species.
Mineralogical ProfileDescription: Thulite is a manganese-rich variety of Zoisite that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It sits at a 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable stone that takes a magnificent, high-gloss polish. It is characterized by its vitreous to pearly luster and its opaque to translucent "rose-pink" color.[Image showing the characteristic "strawberry" pink color of Thulite often featuring white quartz or calcite veins]
One of its most identifying traits is its coloration from Manganese (Mn3+). Unlike many pink stones that can look pale or "washed out," Thulite retains a very high color saturation even in large pieces. It has a refractive index ($n \approx 1.69$ to $1.70$) and, like all Zoisites, it is chemically complex. Because it often grows in massive form within schist or marble, it features a tough, interlocking crystalline structure that makes it much less brittle than its transparent cousin, Tanzanite. When I cut Thulite, I look for the pieces with the least amount of "grey" inclusion, focusing on the pure pink areas to ensure the final cabochon has that legendary "crushed raspberry" glow that collectors love.
