Labradorite

Labradorite is a gemstone that holds the Northern Lights within its structure. A plagioclase feldspar, it appears as a modest, greyish-green stone until it catches the light—then, it erupts into a spectacular display of electric blues, golds, and fiery oranges. I have always been moved by this “hidden” beauty; it is a mineral that requires you to engage with it, moving it in your hand to find the perfect angle where the light ignites its surface. Whether it is a large, rough block from Madagascar or a precisely polished cabochon, Labradorite never fails to surprise. It is a stone of mystery and transformation, a favorite for those who understand that the most profound treasures are often hidden just beneath a quiet exterior.

The Heritage & Discovery

Historical Significance: Labradorite carries a rich legendary history, particularly among the Inuit people of Labrador, Canada. Legend says that an ancient warrior once struck the rocks with his spear, releasing the Northern Lights that had been trapped inside, while the light that remained became Labradorite. Geologically, it is a primary mineral in many igneous rocks, forming deep within the Earth’s crust. In the world of fine gems, it is the definitive example of “labradorescence,” a specific optical phenomenon that has fascinated mineralogists for centuries. It stands as a bridge between the cold, rugged landscapes of the North and the vibrant, shimmering world of optical mineralogy.

Discovery: The mineral was officially named in 1770 by Moravian missionaries who discovered it on Paul’s Island, off the coast of Labrador, Canada. While the indigenous populations had known of the stone for generations, its introduction to Europe caused a sensation, leading to its widespread use in jewelry and ornamental objects. Its scientific classification as an intermediate member of the Albite-Anorthite series helped define our understanding of how feldspars behave in the “solid solution” series.

Important Mines: The original type-locality in Labrador, Canada, still produces high-quality specimens, but for sheer volume and intensity of color, the mines in Madagascar are currently the world leaders. I also have a deep appreciation for the unique, highly translucent material from Finland, often marketed as “Spectrolite,” which displays a full spectrum of colors. For the vault, I prioritize the Finnish Spectrolite for its rarity and the Madagascan material for its incredible, broad “flashes” of neon blue and gold.

Mineralogical Profile

Description: Labradorite is a calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar that crystallizes in the triclinic system. It sits at a 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable stone suitable for most jewelry, though it should be protected from sharp impacts due to its internal cleavage. It is characterized by its vitreous luster and its typically dark grey to grey-green body color.

One of its most identifying traits is its spectacular labradorescence. This is not a surface coating, but an internal optical effect caused by the interference of light as it passes through microscopic, alternating layers of different feldspar compositions (lamellar twinning). It has a moderate refractive index (n approx 1.56 to 1.57). Because it is a feldspar, it features two directions of perfect cleavage, which is exactly where the light reflects to create that “flash.” When I select pieces for the collection, I look for “full-flash” specimens that show color across the entire surface, ensuring that the ancient “Northern Lights” are visible from every vantage point.
