Melanite
Melanite is the dark, mysterious soul of the andradite garnet family. While most garnets are known for their transparency, Melanite is defined by its deep, opaque, obsidian-like blackness. I’ve always been captivated by the way its high refractive index interacts with that pitch-black body color; it doesn’t just absorb light, it throws it back with a fierce, metallic luster. Cutting Melanite is a lesson in precision. Because the stone is opaque, you aren’t playing with internal reflections—you are playing with surface geometry. When we facet these stones, the goal is to achieve a mirror-polish on every junction, creating a gem that looks like it was forged from liquid midnight.

The Heritage & Discovery

Historical Significance: Historically known as “Black Garnet,” Melanite has a somber and prestigious legacy. Its name is derived from the Greek word melas, meaning black. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was frequently used in mourning jewelry, prized for its ability to hold a high polish and its durability compared to other black materials like jet. It represents the intersection of Victorian sentimentality and the raw, volcanic power of the earth.

Discovery: As a variety of Andradite, it shares its discovery history with the broader group, but it was specifically identified as a titanium-rich variant. Its unique chemistry—where titanium replaces part of the iron in the crystal lattice—is what grants it that characteristic “ink-black” depth that distinguishes it from other dark garnets.

Important Mines: The most exceptional “facet-grade” Melanite rough historically comes from the volcanic regions of Mali and the Kayes Region. Notable specimens have also been unearthed in the San Benito County area of California and certain alkaline complexes in Russia. I always look for material from these locations because the titanium content tends to be more consistent, leading to a superior metallic sheen.

Mineralogical Profile

Description: Melanite is a titanium-bearing variety of andradite garnet. It crystallizes in the isometric system, often forming perfect dodecahedral crystals with naturally lustrous faces. It sits at a 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs scale, making it a robust choice for daily wear. Its most striking feature is its sub-metallic to vitreous luster and its complete opacity. Unlike other garnets, the presence of Ti4+ in the structure creates an “intervalence charge transfer” that absorbs all visible light, resulting in its signature black-hole appearance.

Chemical Formula: Ca3(Fe3+,Ti)2(SiO4)3
