4.15 ct CUPRITE – Namibia

Cuprite is one of the most distinctive copper minerals, with the remarkably simple composition Cu₂O — copper oxide. Its very high copper content gives fine material the characteristic deep garnet-red, crimson and almost metallic red reflections for which the species is famous.

This 4.15 ct Namibian Cuprite is a substantial faceted example. In ordinary light the body can appear extremely dark, but when light enters the stone it opens into intense flashes of blood red, burgundy, copper-red and scarlet, creating a dramatic contrast between the dark body and the internal colour.

Cuprite has a very high refractive index and an unusually high density for a gemstone, which gives well-cut material a powerful, almost metallic visual character. At the same time, it is relatively soft and brittle, making larger finished stones difficult to produce and unsuitable for everyday jewellery wear.

Namibia is one of the classic countries for important copper mineral specimens, and faceted Cuprite of this size represents a very different way of seeing the species: not simply as a crystal specimen, but as a dense, intensely coloured copper mineral transformed by cutting.
